Feel Your Way

One spontaneous decision in college led to a road trip with no map and no plans. I just drove and let the pavement carry me to an undetermined destination. Where I felt led.

Completely out of my comfort zone.

And it was one of the most relaxing times I've ever had. There were no expectations. And I couldn't be disappointed because there were no plans. No plans meant I could enjoy the moment as it happened.

Writing has been a bit like that for me. I knew at 15 I wanted to write. For a living. For fun. It was completely an ‘a-ha’ moment. An amped up ‘CLICK’ in my ear to signify I’d found my calling.

Game on.

When it comes to writing, I’m a feeler. I do plot, but I feel it. If I don’t feel it, I don’t want to write it. As a reader, I can tell when the writer has plotted the fire out of a story. It’s too neat, precise, and clean. Life isn’t like that. It’s messy and out of order and usually never how we picture it. Those are the stories that grip you. The ones that take you on a journey you didn’t anticipate when you picked up the book and started reading. And at the end, you feel amazed at what you learned and are glad you didn’t know where you were headed. Or else you may have never started.

So start walking, one step at a time, and see where it takes you. Do something outside your normal routine. Shake it up! That stretches you and makes you grow in ways you never thought you could.
